Earlier this year, more than 700 women gathered at Motor City Casino for United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s ninth annual Women of Influence Summit. The event’s keynote speaker, Donna Oleander, shared hard-earned wisdom that paved the way for her book, “WOWsdom! The Girl’s Guide to the Positive and the Possible”.
Thanks to the support of our corporate partners, United Way donated 125 copies of “WOWsdom!” to our partner Alternatives For Girls (AFG). In addition to the books, the United Way team delivered 50 new purses for the women and girls in AFG programs.
“We are so grateful to United Way and their Women United partners for this generous gift,” said Tonya Adair, president and CEO at AFG. “The books and purses are more than items, they’re reminders to the women we serve that their voices matter, their futures are full of possibility and they have a community standing beside them.”

POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP
For 40 years, AFG has been a pillar of support for girls and young women experiencing early pregnancy, homelessness, domestic violence and exploitation.
Joined by Tonya, who is a former United Way team member, the group was able to experience the organization’s onsite food distribution site, which is powered by Forgotten Harvest.
“What was especially meaningful for our United Way team was learning more about AFG’s vital services, such as their shelter, counseling and child care, and exploring the many ways we can be a strong partner,” said Tina Kafantaris, director of Corporate Experience at United Way for Southeastern Michigan. “Through efforts like our Women United group, we look forward to supporting their mission and helping to strengthen the impact they’re making in the community.”
