Why I Run United

Edward Cardenas

Edward shares his experience with Run United on Team Jeep.

Run United is something I believe in and it’s such a great time every year.

The first year I ran was 2019. Team Jeep was looking for people to fundraise and at that time, we were running in-person with the Detroit Free Press Marathon. While I did not have the stamina for the marathon, I did partake in the 5K. Since then, I’ve stuck with Run United through the virtual modifications.

While I enjoyed the one-time aspect of getting together, it’s been fun to share the marathon throughout the whole month. Within Team Jeep, we’re able to meet new colleagues from across the organization.

The virtual marathon also expands time to fundraise and share our progress with potential sponsors and networks of friends. If they don’t give money or volunteer, then they still get greater knowledge of what United Way does and what they stand for.

WHAT WE RUN FOR

I’m always trying to give back because I’ve been very lucky in my career and personal life. I’ve had people there for me who provided bits of wisdom and assisted me in times of need. It’s important to give back and pay that kindness forward.

In my family, there’s a large commitment to education. My wife is a retired schoolteacher, and both our kids pursued STEAM degrees in college; digital storytelling and engineering.  Our oldest is currently working in automation and robotics for the automotive industry.

United Way always does a great job selecting the causes that we run for each year. Whether it’s books, classroom supplies, or now STEAM— these are extremely important. It doesn’t matter what field you are going into, there is going to be an element of STEAM in your career. We have to introduce students to tools in these emerging fields.

Since 2016, Team Jeep has raised nearly $830,000 for Run United and that really brings it home. When you think about individual donations, even those $5 or $10 they add up. It’s such a substantial amount for the community and it’s heartwarming to know we are really making a difference here.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s annual Run United Virtual Marathon will support students in STEAM learning opportunities. Participants are challenged to log 26.2 miles from August 11 to September 14. Through One Cause, friends, family and teammates can view their progress and virtually cheer them on.
