In the final days of the school year, Chevy Commons was packed with excited racers and colorful box cars for the fifth annual Flint Soap Box Derby. Two of United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s Community Schools joined in on the fun, thanks to sponsorships from General Motors.
“The race itself was a thrill!” said Raegan, driver of Blue Money. “As I sped down the track, I felt a rush of adrenaline and joy.”
“The derby was a fun and unforgettable experience that I will cherish for years to come.”

Sixteen students from Stevenson Elementary and United Oaks Elementary built three box cars, using screwdrivers, wrenches and wires to add axles, steering and brakes to wood. It was nerve-racking for students to trust something they built, but the reward was incredible.
“At first, I was scared to ride the car, but I faced my fears and won the practice round!” said Leah, driver of Blue Rulez. “Everyone cheered for me, and having my mom, dad, and the Stevenson staff there made it even better.”
“I can’t wait to be on the team again next year!”

While Stevenson students sped down the track in Blue Money and Blue Rulez, United Oaks raced in Soar Command. Despite worries, Soar Command finished third place in the race.
“Personally, as the driver, I’m probably the most scared— just because, what if the brakes don’t work?” said Payton, driver of Soar Command, before the race. “The hardest part was probably when we first started building, and you had to get the wires through.”

All students walked away with newfound confidence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) and a feeling of accomplishment in the face of a true challenge.
“Helping design and build the car made me proud because my team and I saw our ideas come to life,” said Leah. “I learned how to make the car fast and safe, and seeing our hard work pay off was amazing.”
