New Roads

A refugee’s journey with Ride United.

I’m a new refugee in America since spring of 2024. I moved to the United States because of the crisis in Afghanistan.

Since this is my first time in America, I didn’t have my own car. It was a challenge because Michigan’s weather is so cold.

My case worker referred me to United Way’s Ride United, and it was an awesome service. Every day was special with Ride United.

When a refugee comes to the United States, they face so many different challenges. Ride United helps with a lot of those problems.

I had no problems with Ride United. I called 2-1-1 to schedule and in about five minutes, they’d pick me up.

They also helped me get a driver’s license by finding me a driving school. I went there, passed the exam and received my driver’s license.

It felt great to get my license. After that, I saved up to buy my own car.

It’s comfortable when you have your own car, you can go anywhere. You can go to the store, work or meet your friends. I’ve had it for three months now and it’s freedom.

I would recommend Ride United to everyone, especially refugees. While I’ve been in Michigan, it was a good service. Now, I’m moving on to new goals and a new job in Nevada.
