2025 Sneaker Ball

Lacing Up for a Good Cause

This year’s United Way Sneaker Ball was a night to remember—full of high-energy fun, bold fashion statements, and a whole lot of heart.

Held in celebration of our longstanding partnership with Labor, the Sneaker Ball wasn’t just about rocking fresh kicks—it was about rallying together to make the holidays brighter for children in need across our community. Proceeds support our annual Labor of Love event, which has been providing presents to children in in Washtenaw and Wayne counties for more than 30 years.

And thanks to our generous guests and sponsors including, Laborers International Union of North America – Local 1191, Utility Workers Union of America – Local 223, International Union Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), UAW Local 7 and Detroit Manufacturing Systems, we’re one step closer to making sure every child experiences the magic once again this season.

“Our Labor family always shows up and shows out for our community,” said Alicia Dennis, Labor Relations director at United Way for Southeastern Michigan. “Sneaker Ball was no exception. The event raised $26,000 and with the ongoing support of our labor brothers and sisters, our kids will feel the love during the holidays and beyond.”

United Way for Southeastern Michigan President & CEO Dr. Darienne Hudson reflected on more than 80 years of partnership between United Way and Labor and highlighted her first teaching job with Detroit Public Schools where she was a member of AFT Local 231.

Former Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence gave a rousing keynote where she encouraged everyone to put their “Boots on the Ground” to make a difference for our children and our community.

The night featured music that kept attendees on their feet, a 360° photo booth, and—of course—the hotly anticipated Best Sneaker Contest. After much debate and plenty of fierce competition, Tiffany Pritchett a member of UAW Local 900 took home the trophy for best women’s kicks and our very own board member and Campaign Co-chair Rich Chang brought home a win for the men.

“I feel so fortunate because so many people in our community don’t even have sneakers to wear, said Rich. “I appreciate all that the labor community does – not just for United Way but for the community to make sure children and families can meet their basic needs.”

Our Labor team expressed gratitude for every guest who danced, donated, and helped turn a night of fun into real impact.

“At the end of the day, it’s about more than sneakers—it’s about standing together for our kids and our future,” said Alicia.

Missed out on Sneaker Ball? It’s not too late to donate and make a difference for families in need.
