I was going through a divorce when my cousin said, “It’s Friday night, come ballroom dancing with me.” I wanted to stay at home, moping and depressed, but she insisted.
That night, I learned ballroom dancing is a secret place that builds your self-esteem, confidence and heart health.
When I first started ballroom dancing, I noticed many women were in fancy dresses and heels, but I also noticed a big fashion no-no. They used drawstring t-shirt bags with rubbed-off logos to carry their fancy shoes.
I’m a seamstress so I went home and started sewing satin drawstring bags with velvet interiors. After winning $2,000 in a Invention Program this turned the bag to a purse. When I interviewed 82 potential customers to guide my design process and many women said, “Oh, this is so needed.”
The Pingree Detroit Hastings St. Event Bag is designed by Amika to carry your heels with a special divider, so it won’t scuff up your heels. I also invented a special locking fastener that connects the strap to the bag.
