United Way to occupy landmark New Center skyscraper early next year

DETROIT —  United Way for Southeastern Michigan President and CEO Dr. Darienne Driver announces plans to move the organization’s corporate office from Bedrock Real Estate Services’ First National Building in downtown Detroit to the historic Fisher Building in the heart of New Center.

For decades, United Way has been a staple in the city starting with its first home which was donated and located at 1212 Griswold in Capitol Park. Its second and current home for more than 10 years at 660 Woodward in Campus Martius was acquired in 2008, during a time when both the streets and buildings in downtown were vastly less populated.

“When considering our mission, our role in the community and remaining fiscally responsible, the Fisher Building was the best choice,” says Dr. Driver. “Our new space will enhance our ability to support more than 200 agency partners in filling social service gaps toward building a stronger southeast Michigan.”

“We are excited to welcome United Way for Southeastern Michigan to the Fisher Building,” said Dietrich Knoer, president and CEO of The Platform. “Its dedication to the community is a perfect fit to furthering the Fisher’s role as a ‘Beacon for Detroit,’ from which our tenants serve Detroit and its neighborhoods, and where we welcome all Detroiters.”

Driver expects the organization to fully transition into its new 36,500 square-foot suite by March 2019. As with United Way’s current space, the Fisher will house the organization’s signature 2-1-1 call center. The new space will also allow the organization to interact with the community, donors and corporate and agency partners in new and exciting ways.

United Way’s new location at the Fisher will build on the organization’s more than 100-year history of serving as a hub for agencies offering care to underserved and vulnerable communities throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
