Chairman, CEO and attorney assumes helm at United Way Board


The United Way for Southeastern Michigan Board is pleased to announce the election of a new chair and nine new members. David Foltyn, partner, chairman, and chief executive officer at Honigman, takes the leadership role as board chair following his successful tenure as vice chair. Foltyn succeeds Mark Petroff, president and CEO, OneMagnify, who for two years lead the board most notably during United Way’s reorganization and new CEO onboarding. Foltyn’s appointment leading the 102-year organization as board chair began on July 1 and continues through July 2021. Honigman, where Foltyn leads as the firm’s top executive, is also a longstanding United Way for Southeastern Michigan corporate partner for more than 60 years.

In addition to Foltyn’s leadership at Honigman and as board chair for United Way, he serves on other boards including Downtown Detroit Partnership and the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, among others. He received a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School and B.B.A. from the University of Michigan.

In addition to Foltyn, nine industry leaders representing a range of industries including education, technology, health care, and labor have joined the United Way board. Each has the option of serving up to three three-year terms. Newly appointed board members include John Cassidy, partner, EY; Dr. Wanda Cook-Robinson, superintendent, Oakland Schools; Maria Dwyer, member in charge, Clark Hill PLC; Ian Hogan, executive vice president, Comerica; Harry Kemp, vice president and corporate counsel, Lear Corporation; Daryl Newman, president, AFL-CIO Metro Detroit; Anup Popat, chairman and CEO, Systems Technology Group, Inc.; Rhonda Powell, director, Macomb County Department of Health and Community Services; and John Rakolta III, executive vice president and chief administrative officer, Walbridge.

Foltyn will lead the 33-member United Way board in partnership with the following elected officers:

  • Mark Stiers, DTE, vice chair
  • Lynda Rossi, BCBS, secretary
  • Elizabeth Alvarez, Kelly Services, treasurer/finance Committee Chair

The board seats became available following the recent transition of members including Lizabeth Ardisana; Rick Blocker; Beth Chappell; Lisa Ford; Charles Hall; Srikant Inampudi; Leslie Murphy; Michael Ritchie; Reginald Turner; and James Vella.
