We are facing an alarming literacy crisis in our region: only 33% of fourth-grade students in Michigan are proficient readers.  When households have 100 or more books in them, reading and literacy rates improve. However, Southeastern Michigan households fall well short of that mark. In Wayne County, only 19 percent of households have 100 more books. Only one in three households in Macomb and Oakland counties meet that number. Together, we can promote reading in schools and communities to drive student achievement and success. Please view the following slides to learn more about this crisis and how this important effort can change the lives of our children’s future.

In their final months as chairs of the Tocqueville Society, Hans-Werner and Anke Kaas call upon you to please join us in donating 150 books to fill one Little-Free-Library located in one of our region’s book deserts. In addition, we have set a goal to raise $50,000 to support five book fairs in schools located in these deserts. The Kaas’ ask that you join them as they personally pledge match gifts for this purpose up to $25,000. Click here to read the Kaas’ full statement.
