Cada vez que ven\u00eda el representante del 211, yo siempre dec\u00eda: \u201cQuiero hacer lo que \u00e9l hace, porque tiene tanta energ\u00eda\u201d. Cuando perd\u00ed mi trabajo, buscaba algo que se ajustara a mis habilidades. El servicio es mi vocaci\u00f3n, y creo sinceramente que es el verdadero prop\u00f3sito de la vida, no solo algo que se hace en el tiempo libre.\r\n\r\nEn tan solo dos meses, comenc\u00e9 a trabajar para United Way como defensora de la atenci\u00f3n comunitaria. El 211 es esencial. Satisfacemos las necesidades b\u00e1sicas para que los miembros de nuestra comunidad puedan sobrevivir. Ya sabe, todos estamos a unos pocos sueldos de quedarnos sin hogar, si no contamos con personas en quienes apoyarnos.\r\n\r\nComo madre soltera, tuve la suerte de ser la menor de seis hermanos, as\u00ed que ten\u00eda a mi mam\u00e1, a mi pap\u00e1, a mis hermanos y hermanas, todos pregunt\u00e1ndome: \u201c\u00bfEn qu\u00e9 necesitas ayuda?\u201d. Incluso con ese respaldo, no es f\u00e1cil hacer la llamada y pedirla. Cuando mi hijo ten\u00eda dos a\u00f1os, me atras\u00e9 en el pago del alquiler y llam\u00e9 a mi pap\u00e1 porque iban a desalojarnos. \u00c9l dijo: \u201cYa voy\u201d, y algo que se me qued\u00f3 grabado: \u201cNo esperes, ll\u00e1mame\u201d. Ese d\u00eda, pag\u00f3 mi alquiler con seis meses de antelaci\u00f3n. Sabiendo que la mayor\u00eda de las personas no cuentan con ese apoyo, me di cuenta de que tenemos que ser las madres, los padres, las t\u00edas y los t\u00edos de las personas que llaman al 211.\r\n\r\nPor eso me parte el coraz\u00f3n cuando alguien llama despu\u00e9s de que ya le han cortado el gas y la luz. Me acuerdo de mi pap\u00e1 y les digo: \u201cSi lleva seis meses sin trabajo, podr\u00eda habernos llamado desde el primer mes\u201d. Me encanta ser la voz que dice: \u201cOiga, estamos con usted. \u00bfEn qu\u00e9 m\u00e1s podemos ayudarle?\u201d Y luego a\u00f1adir: \u201cNo dude en llamarnos en cualquier momento, las 24 horas del d\u00eda, los siete d\u00edas de la semana\u201d. Siempre hay alguien ah\u00ed para contestar el tel\u00e9fono. A veces la gente llama a las 3 de la madrugada y solo necesita que alguien la escuche y le haga saber que no est\u00e1 sola, as\u00ed que eso es lo que hacemos.\r\n\r\nTodos tenemos un momento en la vida en el que pensamos: \u201cSe\u00f1or, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 a m\u00ed?\u201d. Por tel\u00e9fono les digo a quienes llaman: \u201cEst\u00e1 pasando por un momento dif\u00edcil, pero en un minuto estar\u00e1 en la cima\u201d. Aunque a veces no se pueda ayudar con todo, se trata de ofrecerles un salvavidas.\r\n
