She couch-hopped, spending a week or two in the same place and then moving with just a bag of clothes.\r\n\r\n\u201cWe would be in sketchy environments\u2014 I remember going to sleep on the floor and having to cover my son\u2019s ears to keep bugs from getting in,\u201d Brooke said. \u201cBack then I got help, I was able to lean on an agency similar to SOS Community Services.\u201d\r\n\r\nNow 26 years later, Brooke has a bachelor\u2019s degree, master\u2019s degree and is currently the president of the Board of Directors at SOS Community Services. At SOS, Brooke uses her lived experience and education to help others navigate their way through similar situations.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe biggest thing people should know is there\u2019s another side; you\u2019re going to come out of it and you\u2019re going to have an amazing life,\u201d said Brooke. \u201cJust know that it gets better, and that goes for anybody, no matter what circumstances, things will get better.\u201d","":null,"settings":""}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_image","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_image":{"image":2586,"helper_width":"narrow"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<h3>Respondiendo a la llamada de auxilio<\/h3>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/soscs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Servicios comunitarios SOS<\/a> helps families experiencing homelessness find permanent homes through shelter and Rapid Re-Housing. Brooke points out that SOS\u2019s scattered site model allows families to retain the normalcy of a private home while receiving shelter.\r\n\r\n\u201cThe best thing about the scattered site model is that children never realize they\u2019re in shelter\u2014 they just say we have a new place, we have a home,\u201d said Brooke. \u201cSOS is thinking about the child\u2019s perception, everyday thought process and safety.\u201d\r\n\r\nLast year, SOS served 10,398 people in Washtenaw County. SOS offers food, utility assistance, bus tokens, eviction and homelessness prevention, parenting support and early childhood intervention through a nationally recognized home visiting program.\r\n\r\n\u201cI love SOS so much because they are showing up for people and families,\u201d said Brooke. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what type of family you have\u2014 it could be a single parent, a married couple or multi-generational families. Most residents experiencing homelessness were families with children.\r\n\r\n\u201cI don\u2019t think a lot of people realize that we have homelessness happening for families in Ann Arbor and Saline, but it is happening\u2014 it\u2019s just unseen,\u201d said Brooke. \u201cEven though we live in a very affluent county, we still have families who need support.\u201d\r\n\r\n39.6% of Washtenaw County households are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unitedwaydet.wpenginepowered.com\/our-work\/alice-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALICE<\/a>, o con activos limitados, ingresos restringidos y empleo.
