Don\u2019t stop, don\u2019t give up, because there\u2019s something out there for you as long as you keep going long enough.\u2019\u201d\r\n\r\nThat something was the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit (IIMD), a United Way for Southeastern Michigan partner and Detroit Centers for Working Families site.\r\n\r\n\u201cDarrin\u2019s story is not uncommon,\u201d said Megan Thibos, director of economic mobility at United Way for Southeastern Michigan.\r\n\r\n\u201cWhen it comes to household stability, oftentimes, when it rains, it pours \u2014 but with the right supports, a brighter future is possible,\u201d she said.\r\n<blockquote>\u201cUn amigo m\u00edo no dejaba de decirme: \u2018Aguanta. About 20 years ago, he had a solid job, but he lost it in a merger. Without income, he was eventually evicted from his home.\r\n\r\n\u201cTime ran out,\u201d he said. He came home one day to find his belongings at the curb.\r\n\r\n\u201cPeople had already taken most of it,\u201d he said. \u201cI took what I could and walked the streets. That was the first time I was homeless.\u201d\r\n\r\nHe was able to find a few places to stay temporarily and even got back on his feet with a job at a meat processing plant, but the facility shut down and Darrin was back on the street.\r\n\r\n\u201cFrom there, it was just a downhill battle of being homeless for 17 years,\u201d Darrin said.\r\n\r\n\u201cI was just moving from place to place trying to find a job and a way to stabilize my life.\u201d\r\n\r\nHe tried to get help from several different programs, but they never seemed to work out. After a recommendation from a librarian, he attended an IIMD monthly workshop, where he met Bob Sullivan, director of career development there.\r\n<div id=\"hzImg\" style=\"border: 1px solid #ffffff; line-height: 0; overflow: hidden; padding: 2px; margin: 0px; position: absolute; z-index: 2147483647; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.33) 3px 3px 9px 5px; opacity: 1; top: 1300px; left: 393px; background-color: #ffffff; cursor: pointer; pointer-events: none; display: none;\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n<div class=\"full-width-image\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/unitedwaysem.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/EOY-Darrin-6824-1400x935.jpg'); --imageratio: 66.75%;\"><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"post-image-caption\"><\/div>\r\n<section class=\"post-paragraph\">\r\n<div class=\"container-imported\">\r\n<h2>\u2018\u00c9L ES UN SUPERVIVIENTE\u2019<\/h2>\r\nThat meeting two years ago changed Darrin\u2019s life.\r\n\r\n\u201cHe\u2019s a survivor,\u201d Bob said of Darrin.\r\n\r\n\u201cHe knows how to survive on the street and he knows how to find work necessary to survive. He\u2019s very smart, has a wonderful personality and is a super nice guy.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe feelings between the two men are mutual.\r\n\r\n\u201cHe\u2019s more than just a voice you can rely on,\u201d Darrin said of Bob. \u201c(He\u2019s) somebody that knows what I\u2019m going through. He knows how tough life can be. Most people think I just tend to be a sponge on society and live off the programs that are available and everything, (but) he knows better, that I can use those as a stepping-stone to better my life to get back to where I once was \u2014 stable and making money and being able to live.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe duo worked together to improve Darrin\u2019s resume. Bob helped Darrin learn how to expand his job search to include the internet, newspapers and even door-to-door visits. The work led to a job for Darrin at a retail store in Midtown.\r\n\r\nBob also connected Darrin with a shelter and, eventually, a more permanent place to live in a high-rise near the institute. Recently, Darrin\u2019s subsidized housing was renewed for another year.\r\n\r\n\u201cHe\u2019s motivated,\u201d Bob said of Darrin. \u201cA lot of my clients, I don\u2019t hear from them. United Way provides operational funding and technical assistance to these community-based organizations. Together, they serve about 4,000 people each year, focusing on employment, financial capabilities and income support.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s just one part of our goal to help households reach stability.\r\n\r\n\u201cFinancial stability is a critical foundation for overall household stability and is interconnected with all other areas of family well-being, including physical and mental health, housing stability, food security, educational outcomes and long-term economic mobility,\u201d Megan said.\r\n<blockquote>\u201cLa p\u00e9rdida del empleo y la inestabilidad en la vivienda suelen ir de la mano: perder el trabajo puede llevar al desalojo, y el desalojo tambi\u00e9n puede llevar a la p\u00e9rdida del empleo, porque es dif\u00edcil ir a trabajar cuando te preocupa d\u00f3nde vas a dormir por la noche\u201d, dijo Megan.<\/blockquote>\r\nShe added that falling behind financially and being unable to afford basic needs is a vicious, self-reinforcing cycle. People are forced to constantly juggle bills, and are at risk of utility shutoffs and eviction.\r\n\r\n\u201cJob loss and housing instability often go hand in hand \u2014 a job loss can lead to an eviction, and an eviction can also lead to job loss, because it\u2019s hard to show up to work when you\u2019re worried about where you\u2019ll sleep at night,\u201d Megan said.\r\n\r\n\u201cBut with the right supports \u2014 starting with an empathetic and knowledgeable coach \u2013 it\u2019s possible to create a self-reinforcing positive cycle of financial stability and economic mobility.\u201d\r\n\r\nFor example, individuals in a stable home are better able to find and keep a job. Adults who can meet their basic needs are less stressed, and able to devote time and energy to career advancement and financial planning. Parents can provide for their children and support their growth.\r\n\r\nDarrin thinks about what it would be like to have children and knows he\u2019s better prepared to have a family thanks to the training he\u2019s been through.\r\n\r\n\u201cIf I do have kids one day, I know how to use the dynamics of being able to balance my budget, take care of my kids, my wife and my home,\u201d he said. \u201cI learned about how to be better with my money.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe path to stability has its ups and downs. At United Way, our goal is to help people move forward.\r\n\r\n\u201cAchieving economic prosperity is a long-term process in which small successes build upon each other, but small setbacks threaten to derail fragile progress,\u201d Megan said.\r\n\r\n\u201cAs a society, we need to redesign our social support systems to celebrate and encourage small successes more frequently and to be more forgiving of setbacks. We need benefit systems that offer a longer and more generous runway before benefits are reduced or cut off. And we need a much deeper focus on creating truly accessible opportunities for individuals to improve their economic situation regardless of their starting point.\u201d\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- end .container -->\r\n\r\n<\/section><section id=\"text-block-image\" class=\"\">\r\n<div class=\"container-fluid pl-lg-0 ml-lg-0\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-lg-5 pl-lg-0 text-center text-lg-left\"><img class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/unitedwaysem.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/EOY-Darrin-6849-1024x684.jpg\" \/><\/div>\r\n<!-- end .col-lg-6 -->\r\n<div class=\"col-lg-6 divider\">\r\n<h2><\/h2>\r\n<blockquote>\u201cEs un sobreviviente\u201d, dijo Bob sobre Darrin. \u201cSabe c\u00f3mo sobrevivir en la calle y sabe c\u00f3mo encontrar el trabajo necesario para sobrevivir\u201d.\u201d<\/blockquote>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- end .col-lg-6 -->\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- end .row -->\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- end .container -->\r\n\r\n<\/section><section class=\"post-paragraph\">\r\n<div class=\"container-imported\">\r\n<h2>\u2019UN PLIEGO EN TODO\u2019<\/h2>\r\nDarrin is fortunate to have found a home before the pandemic set in. But for every person like Darrin, there are many others who are struggling. According to the American Housing Survey, 15 percent of Michigan households were housing insecure even before the pandemic began. Now, with unemployment rates and COVID cases still soaring, we know the problem is much worse.\r\n\r\nOur COVID-19 Community Response Fund was there to help families when they needed it most. As of December, United Way supporters helped raise more than $37 million for the fund. Nearly $6 million so far has gone toward shelter in the form of 84 grants to partner agencies. These funds <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedwaysem.org\/es\/blog\/covid-19-community-response-fund-partner-profile-cots\/\">ayudamos a nuestros socios a seguir prestando servicios<\/a> to help those experiencing homelessness.\r\n\r\nDarrin prefers meeting people in person, but the pandemic has forced things like job interviews to be conducted over the phone or email.
