When we see and grieve the violent acts that occur today, we often don't look at the history of how we got here. Systems are the complex webs of institutions, policies, beliefs, history, decisions and values held by people. Antes de la d\u00e9cada de 1830, m\u00e1s de 125 000 ind\u00edgenas y nativos americanos viv\u00edan, honraban y prosperaban en las tierras occidentales. Cuando llegaron los colonos europeos, los pueblos nativos e ind\u00edgenas fueron asesinados violentamente, expulsados y posteriormente institucionalizados para asimilarse a la sociedad colonizadora europea. Originalmente, los colonos europeos expulsaron y asesinaron violentamente a los pueblos ind\u00edgenas y nativos para utilizar la tierra para cultivar algod\u00f3n con fines lucrativos, respaldados por el violento trabajo esclavo de los negros de \u00c1frica y el Caribe. Los Estados Unidos y Canad\u00e1 se fundaron sobre actos violentos de colonizaci\u00f3n. La colonizaci\u00f3n puede haber sido el comienzo, pero no fue el final de la violencia sist\u00e9mica en la cultura occidental. And keep in mind, the opposite of violence is peace. If violence feels too heavy to think about or feel through, it is OK to think of this word as an absence of peace.
