The holiday season is a time filled with joy and fun with family and friends. We can reflect back on another year well spent, and look forward to the new year to come. For all of us at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, it’s a time we’re reminded of the generosity and commitment of our donors, advocates and volunteers who make our work possible.
But for some people, the holidays can be a difficult time.
In our region, 44 percent of families struggle to afford the basics like food, shelter and child care. For these families, one minor setback can lead to a major crisis.
Thankfully, United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline is there every day to help those in need.
Every five minutes, someone reaches out to United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s 2-1-1 when they don’t know where else to turn. And every time, our committed 2-1-1 community care advocates are there to answer the call — whether it’s the weekend, or the middle of the night, or Christmas Day.
In 2019, we answered more than 100,000 calls from people in need who reached out to us for help. People like:
Support of our 2-1-1 helpline is just one of the ways our supporters helped make an impact in our community this year. Together, we connected parents with quality child care and resources to help keep their kids on-track in school. We helped children access nutritious meals in school and during the summer. And we connected thousands of individuals with free tax preparation, financial coaching and job training.
Join us in 2020 as we continue to change the lives of our friends and neighbors in Southeastern Michigan. Sign up for emails and we’ll keep you posted on how YOU can make a difference with us.
From all of us at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, have a happy holiday season and a wonderful new year.
