Emerging Philanthropists Spotlight: Justin Remington

When did you first start supporting United Way? Why did you join EP?

I have a family history with United Way. My father worked at the United Foundation (which is now United Way) and my mom worked for United Way as well. I joined because I wanted to be among my peers who also understand the importance of nonprofits to the community.

What was your first job?

I was a stock boy at Pet Supplies Plus.

What was your most memorable volunteering experience?

Many years ago, United Way gave away two cars to unsuspecting people. Being able to see hardworking Detroiters get surprised with a new car was the coolest experience.

What is your favorite pastime / hobby?

Food, more specifically eating said food. I always struggle with this question as it seems like there is no time for a hobby with having a career and a family. Food is also an expression of feelings, emotions and so much more.

What book have you read more than once? Who is your favorite author?

I have read “10 Little Teddy Bears Splashing in the Bath” easily 300 hundred times…only because it’s my daughter’s favorite book. Dr. Seuss will always be my favorite author as he transcends all ages and his quotes will live on forever: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
