Support Working Families: Put the increased Earned Income Tax Credit into effect this year!

Published on May 2, 2023 in

Thanks to the efforts of advocates like you, the legislature and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took a huge step in support of working families by enacting a substantial boost to the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This vital support will now put five times more money back into the pockets of low- to moderate-income households!

While this is a huge victory for so many across our state, the new law did not receive immediate effect, which means families will not be able to claim the credit until 2024. However, SB 144, which has already passed the state senate, would provide immediate relief by making the EITC expansion effective this year.

If passed, SB 144 would provide immediate support to families and nearly one million Michigan children as soon as this summer by:

  • Providing an average boost of $600 to families through their state tax refunds.
  • Bringing approximately $460 million back to our local economies and boosting small businesses, with most of the additional income being spent in local grocery stores, pharmacies, auto shops and more.
  • Enabling struggling ALICE households to cover the cost of essentials like food, child care, utilities and more.

We are so grateful to our state legislators and Gov. Whitmer for taking swift action to strengthen this vital support for hundreds of thousands of workers and their families. Please take a moment to encourage them to support SB 144 and provide this support immediately to millions of Michiganders!
