Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan’s Legislature passed a balanced, bipartisan budget that includes significant funding for important initiatives around education, public health, workforce development and early childhood learning.

The “Make it in Michigan” budget allocates an historic $81.7 billion in direct funding toward the programs and services that will support Michigan families, including:

  • Improved access to healthy foods, including providing free breakfast and lunch to all public school children.
  • Investing $254.6 million to expand 4-year-old pre-K programs, a giant step toward universal preschool.
  • Expanding eligibility to 350,000 people to earn their associate degree or skills certification for free by lowering the age of MI Reconnect from 25 to 21.
  • $140 million to boost wages for direct care workers and other staff helping with home-based care and nursing home services.

This budget is an enormous victory for ALICE Households throughout our region. Thank you to everyone who joined us in advocating in favor of these programs. Please join us now in thanking our legislators and Governor Whitmer for making it a reality!
