Keep Mothers and Babies Safe

The U.S. has the highest mother and infant mortality rates of any developed country, a health crisis that disproportionately impacts mothers and babies of color. Studies show that Black babies in Michigan die at almost double the rates of those among Latinx, Asian, and white babies, and that as many as 75% of these deaths are preventable.

To address this issue and ensure healthy outcomes for all mothers and babies, Michigan legislators introduced the Momnibus Bill Package. This is a series of bills that would:

1. Expand insurance coverage for licensed midwives, who can give mamas personalized care and are shown to improve medical outcomes.

2. Track health care outcomes and mistreatment so mothers can make more informed decisions about where and how they give birth.

3. Protect pregnant and lactating moms from discrimination.

Expectant mothers, regardless of race, ethnicity or ZIP code, should be confident that they will receive the attentive, quality care they need to safeguard their health and that of their baby. It’s time for Michigan to protect all mothers and dramatically improve health outcomes for infants by enacting common-sense protections and expanding care options. Tell your legislators to protect Michigan’s mamas by passing the Momnibus!
